What Is Spam?

What is spam?

In the simplist of terms, spam is unsolicited commercial email (UCE): any email that you didn’t sign up to receive and that is intended to sell you something.

The US Can Spam Act of 2003 provides the basis for a legal definition of Spam. Critics believe the Act does little or nothing to stop the onslaught of UCE. Others argue that in fact it provides a method for prosecuting the worst offenders, and there are reports that the major ISPs such as AOL and Yahoo have noticed a significant reduction in spam at the server level.

Your Terms of Service agreement with your ISP or web hosting company may further define spam and the consequences for sending it. Be sure you read and understand the terms of your contract before you send unsolicited email. If someone legitimately complains you may find your Internet connection or website suddenly disconnected.

For our purposes at Spam Stopping we define spam as any unwanted email that arrives in our inboxes and yours. Whether they are offers of cheap medications, promises of riches to be made without lifting a finger, and offers of loans or the chain letters that seem to circulate continuously, we’ll show you how to take control.

Spam is probably here to stay; our tips and techniques can help make it less annoying.
